1.  Take it seriously and be professional.  Even if it is your first job, it is important and the employer wants to you see if that way as well.

2.  Bring the correct paperwork.  When you’re filling out an application you’ll need your drivers license or a picture ID, social security number and in some cases a work permit.  Make sure you check with your school guidance counselor to see if you’ll need to complete a work permit.

3.  Appearance and enthusiasm are important.  Make sure the you dress for success, even when just picking up the application.  Ball caps, ripped jeans and t-shirts are no-nos.  Employers also want to see a positive, outgoing attitude.

4.  Be realistic with wage expectation.  The majority of summer jobs for teenagers are going to pay minimum wage.  After you get one summer of work under your belt and gain some experience, employers will often consider a wage increase.

5.  The time to apply is now.  Most employers do their hiring for summer in early May.  If you haven’t already started applying, make sure you do it before it’s too late.
