Is Your Child Prepared for College?

It is never to soon to start talking college with your children.  Whether they’re in middle school, high school or even entering college this fall, here are some tips to help guide your kids’s decision making process.

1.  Academic Preparation- Many colleges and universities are finding that their students simply aren’t strong enough in the fields of math, science and reading.  Make sure that your middle school or high school student takes plenty of courses in these areas.

2.  Career Exploration- Talk to your kids about the fields that interest them.  Look for things that fit with their skills and abilities.  If you child has a career path when entering college, it is much easier and cheaper to stay focused.

3.  Chose the College or University Based on the Right Things- Don’t pick a school based on where you friends are going or what is cool.  Look at factors like, the degree programs they offer, the size and location and their instructional style.

4.  Financial Options- Always make sure to apply for FAFSA and look into scholarships offered.  Also, think about how you will be able to mix a job and school if you’re working to fund your education.
