CFL Light Bulb Disposal

Compact Florescent Light Bulbs (CFL) are great money and energy savers.  Just make sure that you dispose of them properly when they burn out.

Do not throw CFLs away in your household garbage.  These bulbs contain a small amount of mercury that can be dangerous if the bulb breaks in your trash.  Visit www.earth911.org or call 1-877-EARTH911 to find out what the disposal options are using your zip code.  You can also check directly with your local waste management agency to find out what recycling options are available.

Gov. Granholm Recognizes The Motion Initiative

Earlier this month we featured The Motion Initiative in our show.  http://www.marandatv.com/2008/09/15/where-you-live-september-13-2008/.  The Motion Initiative is an urban cooperative in downtown Grand Rapids that uses bicycling to connect with local kids.  This Saturday, Sept. 27, Governor Jennifer Granholm is recognizing the organization for their committment to the biking community and encourages Grand Rapids residents to support their efforts.

From Noon-4pm the Motion Initiative will be open and accepting donations of bikes and bike parts for their earn-a-bike program.  They will also be providing free safety repairs and general tune-ups to those in need.  Stop by their garage at 1035 Godfrey SW, Grand Rapids, 49503 to show your support!

Dove Family Film Festival

Every time West Michigan families head to the movies, they face a tough decision, “what movie should we see?”  It’s becoming harder and harder to identify a movie that can be enjoyed by the entire family.  Thanks to the Dove Foundation it’s becoming much easier.

Maranda has teamed up with the Dove Foundation to present the Dove Family Film Festival, September 19 through November 6, 2008.  This festival features weekly movies that are approved by the Dove Foundation as “family friendly” and appropriate for all ages.  All films are totally free to children 12 and under and adults get in for just $2.50.

Time Management Tips for Busy Parents

Juggling kids, work, and social committments can be overwhelming, especially if you’re not good at time management.  This week we introduced you to Judy Warmington and Treva Berends, two professional organizers from the Grand Rapids area.  Here are some of their tips that can help your family.

1.  Plan your day around what’s important.  Choose five things you must get done and if you accomplish more, it’s a bonus!

2.  Do as much prep work as you can the night before.  Pack lunches, set the table for breakfast, lay out your kids clothes.  This will save time the next day.

3.  Don’t think it….ink it.  Create a spot to write things down to eliminate mental clutter.  Often times this can happen at night, so leave a pad of paper and pen next to your bed.

4.  Involve the kids.  You don’t have to do everything yourself.  Teach kids age appropriate tasks and give them regular chores.  Create a chore chart and hang it in a spot where everyone can remember to check it.
