If you’re reading this, chances are pretty good that you were made aware of this blog by Facebook. It’s become standard language to most—“I saw that on Facebook.”, or “Her status said her surgery went well”, even “They had their baby–I saw the pictures on Facebook”.
I’ve worked with clients who’ve friend requested me (which I don’t accept, just because of the nature of my relationship with them), who have had affairs that began on Facebook, who have been bullied on Facebook, even those who have decided to deactivate their accounts because of problems they’ve encountered on Facebook. It’s really becoming quite a fascinating part of our culture today.

It’s easier to put a wholesome meal together if you stock your cupboard with nutrient-rich, convenient ingredients. Here are 20 of my top picks and I’ve included the NuVal score (www.nuval.com). These foods are the higher scoring items in their category:
Almonds – NuVal score 76
Apples – NuVal score 96
Avocados – NuVal score 89
Beans (Black, Cannellini or Kidney) – NuVal score ranges 50-70
Start thinking about ways you can incorporate these items into easy meals – top oatmeal with chopped walnuts and blueberries; make a veggie salad with multi-grain pasta, broccoli and other colorful veggies; grill chicken breasts and top with avocado slices; dip apple slices into almond butter for a snack – and so on.
I tried this delicious simple recipe the other night and it uses 4 ingredients from the list!
Pasta with Walnuts and Goat Cheese Makes 6 servings
½ cup Meijer chopped walnuts
1 tsp. chopped garlic
1 T. Meijer canola oil
12 oz. Meijer Multi-Grain Extra Penne Pasta
1 lb. Meijer frozen peas
6 oz. goat cheese, softened
Cook pasta according to package directions but set timer for 1 minute less than recommended cooking time.
Meanwhile, in a large skillet, combine walnuts, garlic and oil. Cook on medium until golden, stirring occasionally. Set aside.
When pasta timer goes off add the peas to the boiling water and cook 1 minute longer. Reserve 1 cup of pasta cooking water. Drain pasta and peas and return to pot. Add goat cheese, ½ cup cooking water, ½ tsp salt and ½ tsp pepper. If mixture is dry, toss with additional cooking water. To serve, top with garlic-walnut mixture.
Serve with whole grain rolls and orange slices.

Well, after another week of training things are starting to look up. I am up to a half mile of running a day and then I am walking another half mile after that. The soreness has worn off in my legs, so I think I’ll be looking good for the Whitecaps Opening Day on Sunday, April 10! I really think training for the River Bank Run is going to make my game performance even better. I feel GREAT! Who knew a little exercise could make everything else in life easier. Those kids that I race around the bases better look out. Yeah, I have never won a race before, but I think this training is going to pay off. Also, the fans voted for a new food item here called Chicks with Sticks. This new delicacy features carrot and celery sticks with hummus to dip in. I can’t wait to try this new healthy treat as I get in shape. Well, back to training and to help get the ballpark ready for Opening Day. Hope to see you at a Whitecaps game and on race day!
Recently, a blog reader asked me to address the difficult toddler milestone of potty training. Where do I even begin with this one?! So many parents have different strategies, “what worked for them” stories, and opinions on this issue. Speaking of myself, I have two kids down, one to go in my household!
I remember several years ago, when my oldest was in the thick of potty training, I took her to the mall play land to burn off some late afternoon toddler energy on a cold winter day. I was holding my then newborn daughter while my 2 ½ year old was having a good time climbing on rubber breakfast food. As I was settling in with my cup of coffee and taking a breath from the challenges of the day, my 2 ½ year old called out “Mommy, I need to go potty….Mommy, I’m going potty!” Not less than 10 minutes later, the play land had been cleared out and a cleaning crew had arrived to scrub down the big waffle and banana. Oh, I felt humiliated. I felt embarrassed. And only now can I look back with some semblance of a smile.
