At age 14, I got my first taste of a big city when my family took a trip to Chicago. I’ll never forget sitting in the backseat with my younger sister and watching the skyline as we drove in. I was immediately memorized by skyscrapers and the hustle and bustle of the big city. From that point on, I told myself I was moving out of Grand Rapids when I got older.
I remember being in high school and thinking, “Grand Rapids is so boring.” Or, “there is nothing fun to do around here.” But as I got older and wiser I learned to appreciate the things that really matter and make Grand Rapids such a cool city. Over the past 10 years I’ve seen Grand Rapids transform into a place with excellent schools and health care, diverse restaurants, music and art institutions, growing tourism, innovative “green” initiatives and a caring community. In fact, it makes me proud to be raising my daughter in a place that is the best of both worlds…..a big city feel and strong mid-west values.
I recently came across an article in Rapid Growth Media and it sparked my interest. Do you think Grand Rapids has the potential to be the next Chicago? We shall see…..

Research shows that parent involvement is important to a child’s success at school. The more engaged a parent is in their child’s education, the more likely the child will show greater interest in their school work.
“Homework is an effective tool to reinforce classroom instruction and improve student learning,” says Joe Nieuwkoop, principal at Cross Creek Charter Academy (http://crosscreek.heritageacademies.com). “It’s also an opportunity for parents to become more involved in the school process and to gain a greater appreciation for the work their child is doing.”
GENERAL HOMEWORK TIPS FOR PARENTS • Make sure your child has a quiet, well-lit place to do homework. Avoid having your child do homework with the television on or in places with other distractions, such as people coming and going.
• Make sure the materials your child needs, such as paper, pencils and a dictionary, are available. Ask your child if special materials will be needed for some projects and get them in advance.
• Help your child with time management. Establish a set time each day for doing homework. Don’t let your child leave homework until just before bedtime. Think about using a weekend morning or afternoon for working on big projects, especially if the project involves getting together with classmates.

That’s what we did this past weekend — literally, we had a ball. Aptly named the, “Sky Ball,” this round sphere of blue practically disappears into the sky after being thrown as hard as possible onto the pavement. It was one of our 10-year-old son’s favorite birthday gifts a couple of weeks ago. One of those, “We HAVE to play with this right now” kind of presents.

As the flu epidemic continues to grow and more colds seem to be spreading around the schools and work places we are all looking for ways to boost our immune system to prevent getting sick. Can certain foods and supplements help? It came into question this week as immunity boosting claims on certain cereals made the news. While I wish there was one magic food or pill for improved immune function an overall healthy lifestyle is the best advice – exercise regularly, eat nutrient-rich foods from all the basic food groups, receive a flu shot, wash your hands and get plenty of sleep.
