The discussion regarding flu shots has been great! Thanks to each of you for posting your thoughts here on the site and on the Maranda Fan Page on Facebook. Yesterday I sat down with Dr. Fox at Priority Health to get his insight on both flu vaccines being offered this year. Take a look at the interview and let me know what you think!
The cold and flu season is hitting West Michigan families hard right now-mine included! I’ll be interviewing Dr. Fox from Priority Health tomorrow to find out who needs which flu shots, how they’re going to be given out and what symptoms we need to watch for in our children. Are you planning to get the flu shot for your kids? What about the H1N1 vaccine? I’d love to hear from you!
Just a few hours of your time each week is all it takes to be a mentor to someone. It doesn’t have to cost a thing to make a big impact on a child’s life. It would be as simple as reading a book, helping them with their homework, or being a listening ear. There are currently 2,000 kids in Kent County waiting for a mentor. You can help! Simply click on the link below to get started.
In this weekend’s show we introduced you to Bethann and Jeri who were connected through Bethany Christian Services. Bethany is always looking for mentors to work with teenagers who are in their foster care program. You don’t have to change your life to change someone elses. All it takes is being a positive role model and a friend to someone in need. For ways to get involved visit www.bethany.org.

This week our tv crew is traveling around West Michigan collecting great stories about the power of mentors! From watchdog dads in the classroom to moms helping moms bloom…there are all kinds of amazing ways people are helping others! Each story reinforces the fact that it’s really all about one person, giving one hour a week for at least one year—these simple acts truly can make all the difference! Our show, “Where You Live” this coming weekend will explore some awesome mentoring programs in West Michigan. We’ll also share some ways you can become a mentor. If you currently are involved in mentoring program where you live-I’d love to hear about it!
This week our Meijer expert, Shari Steinbach showed us how to make quick and easy pita pizzas. Kids will love not only eating them, but helping make them too.
What You Need:
-3 tsp. olive oil
-3/4 lb. of turkey sausage
-1 cup of fresh mushrooms
-1 cup of diced green pepper
-4 wheat flour pitas
-1 cup of pasts sauce
-2 cups of reduced fat shredded cheese
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Heat 1 tsp. of oil in a medium sauce pan. Add in sausage and cook for five minutes. Add mushrooms, green peppers and cook for two minutes.
2. Spread each pita with 1/4 cup of pasta sauce and top evenly with sausage, mushroom and pepper mixture. Sprinkle cheese on top.
3. Place pitas on a baking sheet and bake for ten minutes or until the cheese has melted.
When was the last time your family sat down to eat dinner together? If you can’t remember, you’re probably not alone. It’s important to make the time because eating as a family can make your kids smarter, more social and less likely to get involved in drug and alcohol use.
Here are some fun ways to get your kids more involved in meal time:
Get your kids in the kitchen. Letting them help with preparing dinner is a perfect time to talk about your day and teach them useful tasks. Have your kids tear lettuce for salads, crack the eggs and peel veggies.
Setting the table. Kids can easily fold napkins, set the table and pour beverages for dinner.
Create a theme night. Make dinner time fun by trying themes like Italian, BBQ or Asian. Add music, hats and play games too.
Pick a Guest of Honor. Kids will love taking turns at being the special guest. Let them sit at the head of the table and serve his or her favorite foods.
