Best Beach Beverages!

Summer is in full swing and many of us will be heading to the beach this week.  And chances are, you’ll be bringing a beverage with you.  Before you pack your cooler, be sure to look at our guidelines for choosing the best beach beverages.

1. Drink fluids every hour
Ideally, you should apply your sunscreen every hour so make it a habit to also drink fluids every hour.  Aim for a total of 64 ounces of fluids each day and more if you are exercising or sweat a lot.  You can’t rely on feeling thirsty to know if your body needs fluids so it’s a good idea to keep a water bottle for everyone at the beach.

2. Don’t pack the caffeine
Pop, coffee, energy drinks and tea all contain some caffeine which has a diuretic effect and can cause water loss from the body.

3. Drink your fruits and veggies
100% fruit and vegetable juices are a great way to quench your thirst and provide your body with needed vitamins and minerals.  These beverages also contain varying amounts of potassium and sodium, important electrolytes that are lost in sweat.

Park Party at Kollen Park on Thursday!

On Thursday, July 16th we’ll bring the Park Party to Kollen Park in Holland.  This is a beautiful park that offers all sorts of great things for families to enjoy!  Free lunch will be served at 11:30 on Thursday and our party will run from noon until 2 p.m.  I anticipate a large crowd, so come early and be prepared to wait in line for our big attractions.  I’d also suggest you bring along water bottles for the family.  Ice Mountain provides thousands of bottles of water for each event but everything is offered, while supplies last.  It’s always good to be prepared  so pack your own water in case it’s hot and in case we run out.   Another suggestion-plan to come early or stay a bit later after the event.  This park has a beautiful boardwalk along Lake Macatawa and a playground kids will love!  So, plan to spend some time in Holland this Thursday at our fifth Park Party of the summer!

A Social Networking Geography Lesson

logo-nationalheritageLiving a life-long dream of traveling the United States, Chandler Woods Academy teachers Jake Downing and Kristin Downs decided to include their students, school parents and colleagues on their recent journey. By creating a blog and through frequent updates on Downs’ Facebook page, the teachers welcomed followers along on their marvelous adventure.

Starting in Grand Rapids, Mich., Downing and Downs headed west on their way to the Pacific Ocean. During their three-week exploit, students and others were treated to glimpses of numerous vibrant cities, including Seattle, San Francisco and St. Louis, as well as national treasures such as Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone Park and the Grand Canyon.
