The Benefits of a K-8 School
Parents currently examining the educational choices for their elementary school-age children may want to take a look at the advantages of a K – 8 school before enrolling in a traditional K-5 elementary school.
Research shows that there are many benefits to both elementary and middle school students who attend a K – 8 school. Among those benefits is the opportunity older students have to mentor younger students. As a result, older students develop leadership skills and responsibility. Another consideration is that there is less anxiety about entering the middle grades, because the students have a long-term relationship with the school and the teachers. Additionally, students are sheltered during vulnerable pre-adolescent years when they may not be ready for the transition to a different setting. Research also indicates that students at each grade level attending K – 8 schools achieve higher levels of academic growth over time, and student achievement levels do not drop as is typically seen during transition years with students attending traditional middle schools.
While many schools provide a great education — both K – 8 and those who transition out students at middle school — the factors that come into play with pre-adolescents are significant and should be considered when making the appropriate choice for your child. Ultimately, the goal is to enroll your child in a stress-free educational environment that provides the greatest opportunity for academic growth.

I’ve been a part of the WOOD TV8 team since 2005. As Special Projects Producer, I work side by side with Maranda making things happen behind the scenes. I coordinate Maranda’s Park Parties each summer and produce a variety of station broadcasts and events through out the year. I also serve as the producer of Maranda’s weekly half-hour show, Where You Live. I love the variety of my job and getting to be a part of the impact Maranda is making on kids in our community!
Outside of work, I've been married for seven years to my husband John and we have two beautiful daughters, Sophia and Stella. When I'm not busy trying to keep up with the kids, I spend "me time" reading fashion or celebrity magazines, sneaking in some good reality television, walking around Reeds Lake with girlfriends and exploring new restaurants with my hubby.
Inspirations for my blog come from my daily life as a busy working mom -- trying to juggle a full time job and be a full time mom to a spitfire five year old and a new baby.
